Do you still need to use bait with fishing lures?
Posted on Mar 14, 2010 under Fishing Lures | 5 CommentsAny lures you can recommend? I’m doing some fishing in lake Ontario off the shore.
I’m just catch and release fishing for fun, doesn’t matter to me what I catch. Thanks for the quick response
Lake Ontario has many species of fish: lake trout, brown trout, small mouth etc.
a multispecies bait like rapala floating baits or in-line spiners like panther martins will cover multiple species. small swimbaits are easy too.
but what are you Fishing for?
lures dont require additional bait.

No, you don’t need to use bait on lures, but sometimes they work better when you sweeten the deal by adding commercial scents to the lure in a spray or dipped form. Salmon and steelhead fishermen even tie a wrap of fish skin around some of their lures because of how much better they work. And walleye fishermen add a piece of worm or leech to their lures for the added action and scent. It works.

No. Adding bait to lures normally ruins the lures or makes them smell horrible, but i am a firm believer that they do work. One thing i always did was tipped a curly tailed grub with a piece of earthworm. Caught a lot of ‘gills like that. I advise you not using bait with lures. Generally it’s just messy.
If you just want to catch a lot of fish here are some good lures for that …

Not necessary but it helps a lot. Just make sure it doesn’t ruin the lures appearance as said above. Don’t put a huge piece of bait on a small lure. When i go deep sea and I am using lures I put a strip of squid on the hook. It flutters making it look more appealing, the smell make the fish more willing to bite it , and once they bait it they will hold on longer giving you extra time to set the hook. Obviously it doesnt work with some baits but it works for most. People often hook a small minnow through the nose and put it on their ordinary spinners, like a panther martin spinner. Remember to make the extra bait look appealing not all bunched up. Good Luck!
