fishing knots for a novice?

Posted on Mar 14, 2010 under Fishing Knots | 7 Comments

Hi

I’ve just bought myself a simple rod, which I’ll use to surfcast.
That’s basically the ONLY technical term I know so far haha :)

My line has a floater, 5 small lead weights (is that enough?) a metal wire-thing at the end of which is the lure.
Can anyone tell me what knots I need to know, especially the one used to attach the "metal wire" to the nylon?

Is there a website where I can find basic diagrams explaining all the essential points I need to know concerning my rod and line?

Thanks

P.S: don’t adivse me to ask at a tackle shop, I’m in Central America, the vocabulary will be lost on me and of no help for further internet research – need it "en ingles"

This is by far my favorite knot, the "Uni Knot", it’s simple easy, super strong, and has many uses.

However, is you are using braided line, than this knot my come loose, as will most knots used commonly in mono lines. You should use a knot that requires the line to be doubled, you can tie this knot if you double the line when passing the line trough the eye of the hook. Otherwise a good simple knot is Palomar knot, or double Palomar knot:

I use 1oz weights when I fish currents.

When I use a steel leader with a hoop, I’ll attatch a swivel snap to my line then attach the leader hoop to the swivel snap. (I use a 30lb swivel snap)

The three basic knots that help out alot are:

    The Polomar knot
    The Albright knot
The Clench or improved clench knot
