i would suggest …
i would suggest shaving small pieces from a large stronger hardwood. same concept just with small shaving of a stronger wood

Until I see that hook catch a fish, I don’t think it’s worth the effort. Also any fish big enough to swallow a hook that size would destroy it.

Hello E2F83. Bone or thorn hooks have been catching fish for over 10,000 years that we know of. YES- smaller ones are good for mostly smaller fish that are easier to catch anyway. The larger hook ( see10:15) is NOT for large mouth or big game fish, but sharpen the top and tie the line 2/3 down the shaft toward the barb. It may cause the hook to rotate and lodge when swallowed.
Straight pieces of thorn woven in a line were STILL being until recently to catch 2 to 5 pound flatfish on mudflats

@E2F83 I recommend looking at Ray Mears video clip from his Aboriginal Britain show. He uses a thorn to catch 3 flounder. Also, this type of hook shows up all over the world both historically and contemporary to our time. It does work differently than a modern hook in that the fish has to swallow the entire hook, which is trickey with Sun Fish and Blue gills but works perfectly on fish that do not nibble their food apart.

couldnt you heat …
couldnt you heat the thorn to get it to bend? ive heat treated limbs on bows before to reset tips ect. im thinking that heating the thorn would help it bend and stay bent.
