    Simple throat …
Simple throat gorges(a stick sharpened at both ends) are pretty good too, not nearly as effective in actually hooking the fish (you kina have to get the fish to swallow it) but there are super easy and quick to make, just sharpen a stick lol thats it. You could make a whole bunch in just 10 minutes or so. But if you have to make natural cordage i would use the actual hook method so that i could make my precious cordage count.

Great skills, but I think if I would need fish in order to survive I would rather try to go with installing a fish trap than with angling.

Great camp craft. My kids want to try it for our overnight lines. The pitch made in the first video can be used for repairing boats ect. and seeing them in videos are much easier for us than trial by error in the bush when books don’t show you all the little things. Thanks

Yeah, I have a B+B business and I often get lost on the way to Sainsburys to stock up.
I just love his accent y’awl!
Surprises me that every time he gets in a situation he hasn’t got a fish hook, but he HAS got a video camera.

    LOL

I tottaly agree, while the whole idea is to help oneself in difficult conditions, chaneces that one will needed these skills are miniscule. Yes, its primary for fun. (unless your job brings chance of being stranded with loss of equipment, which mine does not.)

Your skew hook is a far simpler system. As I understand it survival strategy is Fire, shelter, water, food and conserve energy. And this isn’t conserving energy. It’s a very nice vid showing a very handy skill. but as you say, there are far easier ways to do it. If he has taken the trouble to take a gas lighter, how much more rouble is it to take hooks and line, anticipating getting lost.?
You cant, get lost in England. You do this for fun! LOL!

Oh, and i meant not …
Oh, and i meant not this barbecue utensils. Skewer hook is just short twig, sharpened on both sides, line attached in midle. all covered in bait. when eaten by fish, u pull, this thing skews and jams in fishs throat.

  12. DudeNumberOnePlus Says:

    Sure dude. my point …
Sure dude. my point was that when theres not fishhook, skewer hooks are easier to make, and probaby sturdier, at least if i try what daves there showing, it would probably break in fish. Dont know why dave didnt mentioned them, maybe theyre less liked by fish :D

How about taking 30/40 real fishing hooks? Easier still!

    @E2F83 I recommend …
@E2F83 I recommend looking at Ray Mears video clip from his Aboriginal Britain show. He uses a thorn to catch 3 flounder. Also, this type of hook shows up all over the world both historically and contemporary to our time. It does work differently than a modern hook in that the fish has to swallow the entire hook, which is trickey with Sun Fish and Blue gills but works perfectly on fish that do not nibble their food apart.

  16. kaz2664 Says:

    couldnt you heat …
couldnt you heat the thorn to get it to bend? ive heat treated limbs on bows before to reset tips ect. im thinking that heating the thorn would help it bend and stay bent.

    For the skeptics, …
For the skeptics, what you need to remind yourself is that these primitive hooks aren’t to be used for your annual fishing tournament. They are made and used for emergency self-reliance situations. You’ll most likely be going for smaller crappies or perch anyway. And lastly, Dave said so himself, you never know when you will lose the real fish hooks that you packed in your kit. This is a great skill to have, thank you Dave for teaching us.

    Hello E2F83. Bone …
Hello E2F83. Bone or thorn hooks have been catching fish for over 10,000 years that we know of. YES- smaller ones are good for mostly smaller fish that are easier to catch anyway. The larger hook ( see10:15) is NOT for large mouth or big game fish, but sharpen the top and tie the line 2/3 down the shaft toward the barb. It may cause the hook to rotate and lodge when swallowed.
Straight pieces of thorn woven in a line were STILL being until recently to catch 2 to 5 pound flatfish on mudflats

Until I see that hook catch a fish, I don’t think it’s worth the effort. Also any fish big enough to swallow a hook that size would destroy it.
