I have a couple of vintage lure blanks and I would like to retore them and actually use them as well. I have heard people have used model paints and there is actual lure paint as well. Now I paint cars for a living and have a vast array of colors in my garage. I guess my question is if I used this paint would the fish be able to smell it or is that the reason why they make an actual lure paint?
Actually, I think the only reason for special "lure paint" is so they can charge more for it.
Model paint (lacquer) works fine, as does nail polish (a faster-drying version of the same). I’ve used both and fish have bit the lures just fine. Your car paint would probably work just fine — in fact, it’s probably more durable than model paint or nail polish. As long as the paint is fully dry, the fish won’t smell it at all.

http://brownlures.com/youtube This is a “behind the scenes” look at what all goes into designing and developing a new fishing lure. A single lure can be years in the making, with many different prototypes and LOTS of revisions. We create saltwater Fishing lures (mostly for trout and redfish), and each lure goes through some serious testing and feedback to get everything just right.

I have recently moved near a bay that connects to the Atlantic Ocean (In New Jersey). I know absolutely nothing about lures, how they are used, and their differences. If anyone has the time, care to run me through a couple of the main common/best lures and how to use them? In my area I believe they catch striped bass, fluke, weakfish, and bluefish.
Thank you very much!
I’m leaving in a few days to OCNJ and will probably be fishing off the 6th street jetty, under the 52nd street bridge and maybe go out on one of the Fishing junk tours. When I"m on land I typically get my larger ugly stick and cast out a multi rig with squid and let that go in the current. I then use my deep sea rod to cast out by the peirs and although lures sometimes work the squid bait is very commonly used because it works. If you want larger fish, off a boat you can use bait fish that can be caught or bought, single hook them through the top under the dorsal but don’t go through the spine so they move. Really though what I would do is visit one of the bait and tackle shops and ask for advice – they will hopefully set you up with a good rig to start out with.
Here’s a simple topwater lure that gets great results because of the commotion it makes in the water. School’s in session at http://bassprofessor.com
